Two new amenities coming to Chandler

Chandler, Arizona is looking forward to some attractive municipal development in the coming year. From Marshall Terrill's article in the latest Chandler Connection (no permalink, sorry):

Chandler will break ground on a pair of amenities that will boost the city’s parks system and improve the quality of life for residents. The city’s recreation division will break ground Monday, Nov. 6 on the highly anticipated Chandler Bike Park, Espee Park, 450 E. Knox Road. The groundbreaking ceremony, which is open to the public, takes place at 5 p.m.

...When completed, it will offer BMX and freestyle biking enthusiasts of all ages an exclusive place to develop their skills and socialize with fellow riders.

...Construction on the bike park is a four-month process and is expected to be completed in spring 2007, according to Ohland.

...Three days later on Thursday, Nov. 9, the city will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the $22 million Chandler Heights Community Facilities, a trio of interconnected projects involving multiple departments at the northeast corner of Lindsay and Chandler Heights roads.

The centerpiece of the 113-acre site is an underground water storage system and surface wetlands that will provide water basins, streams, vegetation, wildlife habitats and trails. This diverse habitat, much like Gilbert’s Riparian Preserve, will attract many types of migratory birds year-round and provide a sanctuary for other wildlife. Sitting next to the wetlands will be the new Veterans Oasis Park. This section of the park will include a stocked urban fishing lake surrounded by additional trails, picnic areas, ramadas and play areas for kids. The park will also have a 10,000-square-foot recreation and education center that will provide environmental exhibits, classrooms and community meeting space.

The final piece of the project is the $8 million Chandler Heights Police Substation. The 20,000-square-foot facility is the department’s second substation and is expected to improve response times and bolster security in south Chandler.

...Griner said police hope to move into the facility by Labor Day of 2007 and will eventually house approximately 100 employees.
