President Clinton coming to Tempe to campaign for Harry Mitchell!

Here's something to spice up the final week before the election in CD-5! The Big Dog is comin' to town for Harry Mitchell AND a new poll to be released tonight shows Harry Mitchell is ahead by two points!

Former President Bill Clinton -- already slated to appear at a campaign rally in Tucson on Thursday -- now is planning a stop in Tempe Thursday as Democrats look to oust conservative Scottsdale Republican Congressman J.D. Hayworth.

Democrats are increasingly optimistic former Tempe Mayor Harry Mitchell can unseat the outspoken Hayworth in next week's elections. A new independent poll to be released Wednesday night by Survey USA will show Mitchell with a 2-point lead in the Scottsdale/Tempe congressional district. Other polls show the race as a toss-up.

Clinton's Tempe stop also is intended to rally support for Jim Pederson, who is challenging U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl.

Details of Clinton expected stop in Tempe are still being finalized.

Gov. Janet Napolitano said Wednesday that she agrees with criticisms of Hayworth, including that he is a "bully." The Scottsdale Republican has an aggressive style and has been hawkish on immigration and border security. He opposes guest worker programs favored by business groups, Napolitano, President Bush and Arizona Sen. John McCain. McCain and business groups, however, still are backing Hayworth.

Hayworth spokesman Brian Hummell said race is close, but the candidate still has an edge in the moderate Republican district. Mitchell will support tax increases and is weak on security issues, campaign officials said.

Mitchell counters that Hayworth is cozy with business interests and lobbyists and has rubber-stamped Bush administration policy on Iraq.
