Election day news and views - Nov 7th
We should be expecting the first exit polls to be released in the next few hours (polls close at 7 p.m.). I won't be liveblogging the returns tonight, since I'll be celebrating with Harry Mitchell, Donna Gratehouse, Janet Napolitano and the others in Tempe (and then later, in Phoenix).
However, here are a few articles from the East Valley Tribune for your consideration to hold you until the returns come in:
1. Waves of East Valley voters surged into the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in a pivotal midterm election. Some voters said the election had national implications, while others said voting was simply a civic duty.
2. With one last day to sway voters, candidates running in Tuesday's general election fanned out across the state to rally supporters and remind them to get to the polls.
About 400 people packed into a conference room at the Fiesta Inn in Tempe to cheer on Democratic candidates Jim Pederson and Harry Mitchell. But they saved their biggest applause for actor Michael J. Fox, who has been campaigning for supporters of stem-cell research.
3. The three candidates for the south East Valley’s seat on the Maricopa County Community College District governing board say the election will hinge on experience. Now, voters have to decide if experience leading the nation’s largest junior college system is a good thing.
[Interesting side note: this morning, while putting up a sign for Donna Gratehouse outside of our polling place, I saw a sign for Ed Contreras laying in the dirt. It looked like it had been pulled from the ground, rather than just having fallen.]
4. This is the first year people younger than the voting age of 18 have been able to work at election polling places. Legislation was passed at this year’s session allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to work at the polls and even get paid for it...
5. Republican J.D. Hayworth has announced that he plans to file a federal elections law complaint against the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Democratic challenger Harry Mitchell.
