Did Hayworth torpedo Shadegg's leadership bid?

Phil Boas at Plugged In points us to an interesting article on Arizona Congressman Shadegg's recent loss in his bid for Minority Whip.

Says Boas:

Billy House, writing from the Republic’s Washington bureau, reports that defeated 5th District Congressman J.D. Hayworth may have exerted influence with GOP colleagues to help defeat John Shadegg in his bid for minority whip. Shadegg lost Friday’s private ballot 137 to 57 to Missouri’s Roy Blunt.

Reports House:

Shadegg would not say so Friday, but his efforts to defeat Blunt may have been hindered by fellow Arizona GOP Rep. J.D. Hayworth, who is steamed over his defeat last week by Democrat Harry Mitchell.

In angry comments to fellow House Republicans this week in Washington, Hayworth has been pointing to what he views as involvement by Shadegg and fellow Arizona Rep. Jeff Flake in negative pre-election depictions of him and other Republicans in some media.

...If J.D. Hayworth believes Flake and Shadegg cost him his seat, he’s looking at the wrong Republican. The culprit resides in his own mirror, the one who changed his look and, more importantly, his manner from the more genial, if big talking, politician to the razor-edged border fanatic. Hayworth’s personality is luminous and expressive and given to comic book comparisons, so here’s one: Foghorn Leghorn plays better than Sgt. Slaughter.

Interesting. So, which cartoon character is a good comparison to a bully who, beaten in a fair fight, becomes so angry and spiteful at losing that he takes it out on his own colleagues?
