Republicans having trouble getting their stories straight on "last place" educational ranking
It seems that the recent assessment that Arizona's educational system ranks in last place has thrown Republicans for a bit of a loop.
1. Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne (R) is arguing that the assessment is simply wrong. Of course, he's the one who is technically in charge of managing a quality educational system, so he's understandably loathe to admit the findings of the assessment.
2. Republican candidate for Governor, Len Munsil, however, seems to embrace the last place assessment at face value. Of course, instead of blaming Superintendent Horne or the Republican-controlled state legislature, Munsil blames his opponent, incumbent Governor Napolitano.
3. And how about the Republican controlled state legislature that has worked so hard to cut public education spending for our state over the years? No word yet from them on whether they accept responsibility for the last place ranking, reject it, or point the finger elsewhere.
For example, I'm curious to see how Sen. Huppenthal (R-LD20) plans to spin this, given his membership on the Senate's K-12 Education Committee and his regularly taking credit in debate forums for the state of Arizona's education.
Maybe Munsil, Horne and Huppenthal could sit down over tea and figure out one consistent story between the three of them. When they do, I'm sure Arizona will be interested to hear how they propose to explain why they have failed Arizona's children.
