Mitchell-Hayworth debate border in emails

U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth and his Democrat challenger, Harry Mitchell, argue immigration policy today in the first of four in-print debates that will appear on these pages before the Nov. 7 election.

The debate was conducted via e-mail, with The Arizona Republic asking a question and each candidate responding in turn.

As he's done in the past, Hayworth predictably tries to mislead voters on Mitchell's position, but Mitchell is having none of it and sets the record straight. The closing argument by Mitchell sums up his position well:

Mitchell: My opponent's overtly partisan tone and less-than-truthful response is a perfect example of what's wrong with Congress. We deserve better.

Under Hayworth's watch, the number of illegal immigrants in Arizona has risen 400 percent. Hayworth has voted for amnesty four times. I oppose amnesty.

I support John McCain's bipartisan legislation. Hayworth personally attacks McCain by calling him an "illegal immigration apologist," and stands with Russell Pearce and Randy Graf.

We can't end illegal immigration by yelling and screaming and demagoguing the issue. It takes bipartisan cooperation. I'll work with Republicans and Democrats alike to achieve real results for Arizona.

Meanwhile, check out this list of people endorsing Harry Mitchell. Democrats and Republicans, public officials, veterans, business owners, organizations...there's no doubt who has the greater respect in our community. Compare that list with Hayworth's endorsement list which is blank.
