Hayworth horns in on broadcasting event, sent packing.
When he finally walked away, I was seething. This was a dinner honoring people for their commitment to free speech. This was an industry that had produced Edward R. Murrow and they were going to have J.D. Heyworth speak? And, if so, where was Harry Mitchell his Democratic challenger? My husband knew I was furious, but reminded me we had been invited to honor a dear friend for his long and distinguished career in broadcasting. Tonight, my politics had to stay in check.
We took our seats. Dinner was serviced. The mc announced the evening's speaker and it turned out it wasn't J.D. It was the head of the National Association Broadcasters, a far more appropriate speaker. Where was J.D.? Evidently, he thought he might be able to "say a few words" but was politely turned away. So that is how I spent my night, cheering the pioneers of broadcasting and quietly applauding those who are carrying on their legacy.
It reminds me of when Hayworth was actually invited to speak to a neighborhood group about issues related to their specific concerns, and he instead hijacked the event to give a campaign speech.
Also interesting is the Esquire blurb on Hayworth, whom they say "is an unpleasant man who loves the sound of his own bombast. That might be okay, if he were smart or ambitious or effective, but he's not."
Sounds like a common theme among most people who have had dealings with JD.
