Majority of church-goers disapprove of Kyl

A new poll by Survey USA has a good breakdown on the approval ratings for Senators McCain and Kyl.

McCain does fairly well, with an overall approval-disapproval of 62-35.

Kyl, however, does much worse, at 44% approval and 47% disapproving.

A few thoughts about this, regarding Kyl.

First, any time an incumbent drops below a 50% approval rate, it's considered serious jeopardy for their re-election hopes. With only 44% expressing a favorable opinion of Kyl, it's bad news for him, indeed.

And when coupled with a disapproval rating of 47%, it's very grim, because it suggests that the folks who didn't specifically approve DO have an opinion (they're not just undecideds) and it's negative.

And when added to the fact that there's a viable opposition candidate in Jim Pederson, who just recently scored within 7 points of Kyl on a preference poll, it's especially dark days for Kyl.

The result is that it appears that Kyl is in serious trouble as we move into the summer.

Another key point that leaped out at me from the poll is how church-goears view Kyl. As someone whose personal faith means a lot to me, I am sensitive to how personal faith relates to politics. The trend here is very bad news for Kyl. Fully 52% of regular church attendees disapprove of Kyl and only 37% have a positive assessment of his job performance.

Arizona may well be getting a new Senator Pederson in November.
