Permits unpaid, work slows on Chandler hotel

Work has virtually stopped at the 10-story luxury hotel under construction south of Chandler Fashion Center, and the city has warned the project architect that some permits issued in January have yet to be paid for.

On Wednesday, the Chandler Planning and Development Department sent an e-mail to architect Brett Oaks of Phoenix-based DMJM Harris reminding him the permits had not been picked up.

...The four-star hotel, southwest of Frye Road and Loop 101, has been approved to be a Renaissance ClubSport, a new luxury brand of Marriott that includes a full-service day spa and a 75,000-square-foot fitness and social club. Plans call for 243 rooms, including 10 executive suites. The top two floors will house 27 condominiums that range in price from $500,000 to $2 million.

The hotel has a projected opening date of November 2007.

The 10-acre site will include a 15-story condominium tower southwest of the hotel and a four-story parking garage with more than 600 spaces. Construction on that tower is expected to begin in late summer.

That tower's first floor will be retail, and the second through fourth floors will be office condominiums. Levels 5 through 15 will contain 102 residential units.

Sounds like it'll be quite a place. I noted in the City Council candidate debate last week that candidates suggested that our neighborhood (around the 101/202 interchange) was ripe for 15-plus story construction. So we probably can expect to see a lot more of these taller buildings going up in Precinct 134 and just to the south in the Price Road corridor.
