Frye Elementary going to school uniforms

Responding to parents’ requests, the Chandler Unified School District Governing Board last week approved school uniforms for Frye Elementary School, 801 E. Frye Road.

The approval makes Frye Elementary School the second K-8 school in CUSD to require uniforms for its students, with San Marcos Elementary School, 451 W. Frye Road, the first to do so.

“It seems to be something a majority of parents want in their schools,” CUSD Public Information Officer Terry Locke said. “A survey at Frye Elementary last year revealed more than 70 percent of parents surveyed wanted school uniforms.”

Dr. Ritz said school uniforms help create a purposeful climate with students and improve safety at schools.

“When you have 250 youngsters at recess and they wear uniforms, it’s easier to see who belongs or doesn’t belong,” Dr. Ritz said.

“Uniforms create a feeling of belonging and unity. Uniforms have a calming influence. It’s not a cure all but it’s another intervention to keep kids closer.”

...Affordability for some students was also considered.

“We are looking for ways to address the financial issue for certain students,” Dr. Ritz said.

He said other principals of schools where uniforms are required have spoken highly of the benefits.

The article notes that Hartford Elementary School, 700 N. Hartford Road, is next in line to be considered for school uniforms.
